What is Uveitis ?

  • Uveitis is inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of your eye.
  • The eye ball has three different layers of tissue :
    1. Retina
    2. Sclera
    3. Uvea
  • The uvea contains many blood vessels - the veins, arteries and capillaries - that carry blood flow to the eye.
  • Inflammation of the uvea can result in poor vision.

What are the types of uveitis?

There are different types of uveitis, depending on the part of the eye which is affected:

  • anterior uveitis or iritis
  • intermediate
  • posterior
  • Panuveitis

What causes Uveitis?

  • Infection from bacteria, virus or fungus
  • Auto immune disease-where your immune system attacks healthy cells in your body by mistake
  • Side effect of some medication
  • Trauma
  • Cancers that affect the eye, like lymphomas

What are the symptoms of uveitis?

  • Eye redness
  • Eye pain
  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurred vision
  • Dark, floating spots in your field of vision (floaters)
