What is Glaucoma ?

  • Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve.
  • This can lead to vision loss and possibly blindness.
  • It is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world,especially in the older population.
  • As of 2020,about 80 million people have glaucoma worldwide and we expect to see this number increase.

What causes glaucoma

  • Not fully understood.
  • Increased Intraocular pressure, though not always.

What are the types of glaucoma

  • Primary open-angle – most common form,
  • angle-closure- the pressure rises quickly, suddenly.
  • congenital
  • secondary glaucoma.

What are the risk factors for glaucoma?

  • Old age
  • Intraocular pressure (IOP)
  • Race/ethnicity-Africans and Hispanics are more susceptible
  • Genetics-Family history of glaucoma increases the risk of glaucoma
  • Myopia (near-sightedness)
  • Thin central cornea thickness
  • Prolonged use of certain medications e.g. corticosteroids

What are the symptoms of glaucoma?

  • No symptoms in early stages.
  • Tunnel vision in the advanced stages.
  • Severe ocular pain, often accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
  • Sudden onset of visual disturbance, especially in low light.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Halos around lights.
  • Red eye

NB Acute angle-closure glaucoma is a medical emergency and must be treated immediately or blindness could reasult in one or two days.
